چکیده

The relative worst order ratio, a new measure for the quality of online algorithms, was defined in [3]. Classical bin packing algorithms such as First-Fit, Best-Fit, and Next-Fit were analyzed using this measure, giving results that are consistent with those previously obtained with the competitive ratio or the competitive ratio on accommodating sequences, but also giving new separations and easier results. In this paper we consider newer algorithms; for the Classical Bin Packing Problem we analyze Harmonic(k) [13] and some of its variants, and for the Dual Bin Packing Problem we introduce a new, simple, unfair variant of First-Fit.

Comparing online algorithms for bin packing problems

The relative worst-order ratio is a measure of the quality of online algorithms. In contrast to the competitive ratio, this measure compares two online algorithms directly instead of using an intermediate comparison with an optimal offline algorithm. In this paper, we apply the relative worst-order ratio to online algorithms for several common variants of the bin packing problem. We mainly cons...

Separating Scheduling Algorithms with the Relative Worst Order Ratio

The relative worst order ratio is a measure for the quality of online algorithms. Unlike the competitive ratio, it compares algorithms directly without involving an optimal offline algorithm. The measure has been successfully applied to problems like paging and bin packing. In this paper, we apply it to machine scheduling. We show that for preemptive scheduling, the measure separates multiple p...

Improved Space for Bounded-Space, On-Line Bin-Packing

The author presents a sequence of linear-time, bounded-space, on-line, bin-packing algorithms that are based on the "HARMONIC" algorithms Hk introduced by Lee and Lee [J. Assoc. Comput. Mach., 32 (1985), pp. 562-572 ]. The algorithms in this paper guarantee the worst case performance of Hk, whereas they only use O(log log k) instead ofk active bins. For k >_6, the algorithms in this paper outpe...

Best t is the best known algorithm for on line bin packing in the sense that no algorithm is known to behave better both in the worst case and in the average uniform case In practice Best t appears to perform within a few percent of optimal In this paper we study the expected performance ratio taking the worst case multiset of items L and assuming that the elements of L are inserted in random o...
